3 Ways To Be More Tactful

Being tactful or being more discreet is just that—having the ability to clearly communicate your point all while being sensitive to those around you. Eek. My real friends know that I oftentimes fail at this. There’s a really thin line between hiding what you really feel and presenting your ideas, opinions, and thoughts in a way that makes them inoffensive.

This post is really a reminder for me, but I figured it might help one of your beauties too. Here are 5 ways you can be more discreet in sharing your feelings.

THINK BEFORE YOU SPEAK:

It bothers me when my boyfriend takes a long deep pause before responding to me. But I’ve realized that he’s just a better communicator than me. He takes his time and really thinks about what he’s going to say before he says it. While I just blurt out my immediate gut reaction. That doesn’t go over well with everyone. Even though you’d love to know if there’s something hanging from your nose, you probably don’t want me to yell that out from across the room, #KanyeShrug.

IGNORE NEGATIVE COMMENTS:

This was a listen I had to learn the hard. If you send something negatively I’d cut you with my words. Literally. But know I have come to realize that everything doesn’t need a response. This is especially true if you are in a workplace and don’t want to be part of office politics. You always want to deflect those comments because you never want to get caught up in the “he said, she said” game at work.

Give the positive before the negative:

Sometimes negative feedback is unavoidable. Whether it’s a coworker or your best friend it’s never an easy conversation to have. But insert a little tact and be discreet when you tell your besties her foundation color is a little too red for her complexion. Compliment her on her new blush and add that it would shine even more IF she chooses a different color foundation. Being discreet doesn’t mean lying to people. It just means you might actually care about their feelings. Go figure?!

Timing is everything:

This is half the battle. You may have something perfectly nice to say but it’s just not the right time and it will ruin the social setting. Kind of like when your menstrual cycle shows up and you’re not prepared (however I am in love with o.b.® tampons simply because it’s compact and fits right inside my little makeup bag). Before you make a comment, think about if this is the right time.

Above all else being discreet just means having respect and common decency for those around. N0w it’s your turn. Tell me 3 ways you’ve learned how to be more discreet.
