How I’m Honoring My Mother On My Wedding Day

Planning my wedding has been nothing short of a roller coaster ride driven by my emotions. It’s a collective bunch of happiness, sadness, nervousness and OMGness.
When he first proposed, I immediately told him that I just wanted to go to the courthouse. It just felt easier for me that way. The thought of planning a wedding without my mother was/is heartbreaking. I never imagined that I’d experience this milestone without her. So going to the courthouse was my solution to not having to feel a single thing. This was also me being super selfish. I never even considered (until I was reminded) what my fiancé wanted to do for our wedding. So I quickly changed my perspective and vowed to embrace the hard moments without my mom while creating a few timeless moments.
As I began to map out my big wedding day I knew early on that I wanted to honor my mother at some point during our wedding but I wasn’t sure on how.
Then my fiancé had the brightest idea.
He said, “You’ve spent so much time trying on wedding dresses and figuring out what you’re going to wear why don’t you incorporate a piece of your mother in your wardrobe.” Aha!
Who knew that he’d be so right (don’t you hate when they’re right though)? I literally spent hours looking at poems and bible scriptures. I spent days Googling how to make my mother a part of my day and I never even thought of having her a part of my wedding looks.
For my engagement party I decided to wear a piece of her around my neck for my wedding. My engagement ring is my birthstone Citrine so I thought wearing her birthstone, Garnet, would be a great way to honor her and keep her close during those special wedding moments.
