3 Things Everyone Should Know About Women's History Month

March is Women’s History Month so we’re leaning into that “Who run the world? Girls” energy extra hard (because we’re already living our everyday life with energy right?) Let’s celebrate by learning a few facts about Women’s History Month and celebrating all the things we are not afraid to do.

1. We’re not afraid to ask for more

In 1909, the United States celebrated its first Women’s Day in New York City. Just a day. 70 whole years later, the day was turned into a week in an effort to bring more attention to women’s contributions to history… because could you believe that they weren’t talking about us in history classes up until then? With all that we’ve accomplished? Shame on them. Finally, in 1987, activists successfully lobbied Congress to establish a National Women’s History Month. Now accepting guesses for how many years it will be until women are uplifted, honored, and respected all year round!

2. We’re not afraid to raise our voices

The National Women's History Alliance is a non-profit organization that aims to do just that: uplift, honor, and respect women all year round. Someone has to! Each year they announce a theme and this year’s is “Valiant Women of the Vote: Refusing to Be Silenced.” The 19th Amendment was passed in 1920 and prevented voter discrimination based on sex, but voter discrimination based on race remained for over four decades. (Read: four decades too damn long.) And now in the year 2021, we have powerhouse women like Stacey Abrams who have made sure that voices are heard through their votes. Women are incredible.

3. We’re not afraid to take up space

Listen, men have been in positions of power for too long. They’re making all of the decisions and messing things up. The reality is: women make up more of the earth’s population than men do. (Only by a little bit, but keep this energy, sis.) AND we tend to outlive men. So throw some elbows and claim your space in this world. Because we run it, girls.
