Afrochella 2019 in 5 Minutes (VIDEO)

Afrochella 2019 was (hmm) interesting. I adored seeing all the black and brown faces wearing their traditional African prints… faces painted with Zulu tribe (ish) tribal designs. But Ghana has a thing with time and the use of it. They are mad disrespectful with the idea of time. Nothing starts at the time it is advertised. This can and should be heavily applied to my Afrochella 2019 experience.
My crew of 15+ arrived around 4:30 pm (word is that was way too early). We skipped lines and enjoyed being some of the first footprints on the lawn at Afrochella. But we quickly realized that the VIP area was massive. Like in comparison to the gen pop area, it was Russia vs St. Thomas (for land reference). You literally could ONLY see the stage if you were in VIP. And there we no jumbo screens to view the happenings. I do realize this is too much to ask as I think Ghana would split in half at the requirement of electricity for that to happen. Just a guess though.
But no VIP access was a failed moment on our behalf. Rule #1: Always confirm your status to reduce disappointments.
By 8:30 pm (the time we left) not a nair artist had performed. *Insert extreme eye roll* Rumor is artists began performing at 11ish and Afrochella ended at 6 in the morning. I’m sorry, I didn’t sign up for that.
But I will say that overall Afrochella was a vibe. I still recommend going to experience the festival if you find yourself in Ghana during the holidays next year. I’m all about offering grace and I feel like by year 3 it might have it’s ish together.
Because even with the slight disappointments, I had a blast with my friends. The video below is about 5 minutes of footage, I stopped recording once it got dark because…darkness and safety (I heard folks be stealing)!
