3 Places To Find Black Therapists

If you’ve been following me for a while, you know that I am a big advocate for therapy. I recently had a chat with trauma therapist Kobe Campbell and if you joined that conversation, you know that therapy can transform your life in profound ways. I wanted to put this list together to help you find the resources you need to start your own therapy journey with a therapist who understands your experiences as a Black woman.

1. Black Virtual Wellness Directory

This directory will help you to not only find a Black therapist, but also a Black yoga teacher, doula, or someone to help you through meditation. You can search by location, insurance accepted, and practice. You can also filter results to see people who have experience working with military personnel or LBGTQ clients so you know that the person you find in this directory will be able to serve you in the best way possible. This directory is part of the Black Emotional and Mental Health Collective, which has many free resources on their site, including journaling prompts (you know I love a good journaling prompt), worksheets for accountability and emotional intelligence vocabulary, and video seminars.

2. Therapy for Black Girls

Through this website, you can search for a therapist specifically for Black women! You can filter your search to see therapists who are accepting new clients for virtual therapy if that is something you are more comfortable with (whether because we’re in a panoramic or maybe you don’t have the time in your schedule to travel to an appointment even when the perpendicular is over). Therapy for Black Girls is also a podcast with nearly 200 episodes that covers everything from astrology, to dating, to coping with COVID-19. If you explore their site a bit more, you’ll find that they also have a page with blog posts (if podcasts aren’t your thing) and even an online membership community!

3. Zencare

If you’ve tried therapy before, you know that it’s really important to find a therapist you feel comfortable with. A therapist could be the best in the world, but they could still not be the right fit for you. Zencare helps make this easy for you by matching you with a therapist! All you have to do is fill out a form answering some questions. From there, they’ll use that information to match you with a therapist they think would best be able to serve you and your specific needs. The matching service itself is free— you only have to pay the cost of the sessions you have with the therapist.
