The Basics: 5 Tips On How To Start A Blog
“I’m thinking of starting a blog, where should I start?” “What advice would you give to a new blogger?” “Blogger or WordPress?” I get asked questions like this quite often in emails, or I spend a train riding talking with one of my followers that I run into.
Starting a blog can seem daunting, especially when you see how advanced your favorite bloggers are. But keep in mind every seasoned blogger started as a “newbie”.
So we’ve listed five tips on how to start a blog.
1. Find your niche
Finding your niche is so essential in creating your blog. First ask yourself what do you plan to write about? A simple way to finding your niche is to figure out what you are passionate about. Do you want to write about fashion? Food? Health? Parenting? Whatever it is, figure it out and go for it! If it’s hard to come by right away, don’t worry it’ll come to you.
2. Pick a URL and Platform
Blogger, WordPress, Squarespace, oh my! These are your more popular platforms. But each platform has very different functions that meet certain needs for each blogger. Maybe you want to start off with more of a professional look. Or maybe you want a more laid back platform. Maybe you need something that’s easy to learn and navigate. Every blogger has a particular platform that they like over another. It’s really all up to you, there really is no wrong way to start.
I started with GoDaddy/Wordpress.org. They will set everything up for you and there’s no backend work you will have to do.
3. Be Genuine
This may sound super cliche, but it’s beyond true. If you believe in what you write then your audience will believe it too. If you love what you’re writing about, it will shine through your pictures and writing. Many other bloggers will tell you the same. As the blogging world becomes more and more saturated, being genuine is what will set you apart from other bloggers. If you’re entering into the blogging world just for the perks (i.e. free stuff, money) you will burn out… quickly!
4. Blog consistently
Just dive right in! This is the easiest part. Pouring your thoughts and ideas into your baby is the most rewarding part of blogging. The more you keep up with your content the more followers will come.

5. Wait
Very few bloggers break big early in their blog careers. It will take some time to get the value of your content up and to meet and network with industry people. It will take time to learn the platform that you’re using. It will take time to learn all about HTML, SEO, widgets, etc. Don’t get down on yourself if you’re not getting flooded with emails and comments right away. Let yourself grow and before you know it, you’re five years will have passed and now you’re a well seasoned blogger.
