How To Maintain Your Sanity During the Holidays
The holidays are looking very different this year thanks to Miss Rona. Most of us are either unable to travel this year or opting to not travel this year for the safety of our communities. Not having big gatherings has the potential to make the holidays sad, but they don’t have to be. Here are some ways you can remain calm and sane through these crazy holidays.
Connect with friends and family virtually.
I know we are all missing our usual holiday parties and hopefully you aren’t zoomed out from your 9-5 Zoom meetings. But switch things up and dismantle your Zoom party routine by hiring a DJ (points at self) or even play a quirky game of Black Jeopardy.
Bonus: you don’t have to worry about getting fully dressed up. The laws of the Zoom formal dress code mean you can get dressed up from the waist up and wear your PJ bottoms and slippers. 2020 isn’t all bad!
Establish boundaries with virtual gatherings.
It can be nice to see everyone virtually, but the zoom fatigue is real. It’s just not the same as in-person interaction. Too much of it can be draining and doesn’t fill you up the way normal social interactions would. Just because we’re all home for the holidays, doesn’t mean you have to be available for unlimited Zoom calls. You don’t need an “I’m busy” or “I have plans” excuse; the answer is allowed to just be “no.”
Start new traditions.
What would it look like if you chose to take this potentially sad holiday season and find ways to infuse some happiness into it? Maybe you’ve always wanted to dedicate a weekend to making sugar cookies but never had the time. I baked a poundcake from scratch over the Thanksgiving holiday and I feel like a whole G. Or maybe you want to spend a day in your PJ’s watching cheesy holiday movies. Well, 2020’s gift to you is time, so get to it!
Reflect on the year.
The holidays are so hectic every year. It can be easy to get lost in all the shopping, parties, and celebrations. You’ll find yourself stumbling into January without having dedicated any time to reflect on your year and all the growth you experienced. Reflecting is particularly important this year, the strangest of all years.
