10 Reasons Why Your Hair Isn’t Growing & Your Edges Aren’t Living That Good Life

The dryness and brutality of winter will suck the life out of your hair out. But you may be further assisting the damage when you think you’re protecting it via protective styling. Your first instinct may be to find a protective style like braids or a sew-in which isn’t a bad option but in this weather, we need to take special care of our hair, and edges, or come summer we may not have any and who wants that.

Unlike that ex-boyfriend that keeps coming back like a bad habit, once your edges are gone, they are gone for good.

Here are 10 things that will stop your edges from living that good life:

1. Using Too Much Tension

Pulling your hair up into that cute little bun or ponytail before bed, every night? Try not to sleep with it extra tight. Also wearing buns and ponytails with too much tension pulls on the cuticle of your hair and can pull it so much that it completely comes out. Leaving your edges looking thinner and thinner!

2. Too Much Gel

We all like our edges to stay on fleek, but too much gel can really dry our edges out to the point of breakage. Take it easy with the jam.

3. Excessive Brushing Of Your Edges

Not only are our edges the most sensitive and likely thinner area on your head, it’s the part we likely focus on the most. Excessive brushing, especially with the wrong type of brush, can ruin edges as well. Always use a good boar bristle brush.

4. Wool Hats

You know that hat that is so fashionable, warm and oh-so-cozy you like to wear it with everything? If it’s not satin lined on the inside brim, it might be rubbing your hairline the wrong way.

5. Wool Coats & Scarves

Again, with wool I know! It’s a warm winter material, but it has the ability to rub your nape until it’s naked. Pay attention to problem areas and try to buy scarves made of a different material.

6. Headbands

I love ‘em, you love ‘em and they’re a convenient accent to just about any hairstyle. They can help lay those edges down and take them away too.

7. Wigs, Weaves, Braids, Twists

Wearing any of the above on a regular without letting your hair have a break will really cause your hair to break. Especially wearing braids too tight under your wig or sew-in can cause permanent damage. Make sure you let whoever is braiding your hair know that too tight, just ain’t right if you want to save those edges.

8. Hair Glue

This should already be a big no-no in your hair care regimen, but if you haven’t nixed it do it now! Hair glue if very harmful to your edges especially if you don’t know what you’re doing. Use caution if you have to use it and be very gentle taking it out. This is one I’d leave to the professionals though.

9. Cotton Hair Wraps

If you’re not tying your hair up at night with a satin scarf, you’re sacrificing the health of your hair, period. Satin pillowcases also help.

10. Excessive chemical treatments (dying, relaxers)

Natural seems to be the way to go nowadays, but some of us still relax. Excessive relaxing and dying too often will also kill those edges so watch it, ladies!
