All The Reasons Why You Should #LoveYourHair

My hair is about 75% grey. I’ve had grey hair for what seems like most of my life. I found my very first grey when I was 14. Unlike most women who find grey to be this aging death sentence for your hair follicles, I welcomed every strand. Nearly everyone in my family has grey hair. My mom, my dad, my aunts, my uncles, my grandmother…literally, you are the stranger unicorn if you don’t have grey hair. I grew up believing that my hair was beautiful because the people around me drilled it in my head daily. “You better not dye your hair,” would be a statement I’d hear for decades. I still do.

But not everyone believes grey hair is beautiful. In fact, have you every googled “beautiful hair”? Not only are there no women with grey hair displayed but there’s also no women of color.

What do you see? Brunette. Straight. Wavy. Silky. Photoshopped. This is just another example of how society depicts what is beautiful to us. Experts tell us we should follow the rules. You shouldn’t have long hair past a certain age, curly hair isn’t professional, short hair isn’t feminine, Asian women shouldn’t have blonde hair, etc. The nerve, what do they know? And who are these “they” people? I say, let’s stop listening to them.

Before the Internet was created and seemingly tasked with ruining the self-esteem of millions of young girls around the globe, I was already blessed with several influential people in my life that had premature grey hair. I knew that having grey hair like mine didn’t necessarily mean that you acted or were “old.” My mother was proof. Her envious mane of silver locks was something out of an old black and white Hollywood movie. She would spend hours in the bathroom styling her tresses into the most of-the-moment looks. I remember sitting patiently on her footstool, with my arms on my chin holding up my head up as I gazed at her reflection in the mirror. Like most daughters, my mother represented my first definition of beauty. She was my icon.

Everything about the YouTube film above expresses how I feel. It also amplifies all the reasons why we need to take back what “beautiful” means to us. It’s the reason why I love my hair and why I’ve partnered withDove Hair on their latest social campaign, #LoveYourHair.

Dove #LoveYourHair is a new mission to broaden the definition of beautiful hair by celebrating all hair [types, textures, styles, colors] and inspiring real women to do the same.

Did you know that according to Dove Hair's research only 11% of women love everything about their hair and wouldn’t change anything about it? Dove Hair is committed to curating a world of beauty that represents a source of confidence for women, not anxiety. Women should be free to do whatever they want with their hair. Whether we want to wear our hair straight, curly, grey, or purple we should have the freedom to make those choices without judgment from the world.

So I challenge you (yes you with the beautiful hair) to own whatever makes you uniquely beautiful. Tweet me a picture of your hair using the hashtag #LoveYourHair or you can join in the fun over on Pinterest. I can’t wait to see you! XO

While I’m partnering with Dove Hair for this post, you beauties know that all thoughts and opinions are my own. Thanks for supporting the brands that make my blog possible!
