Live From the #SelfCareIRL Retreat in Mexico
LISTEN TO EP 03: ITUNES | SPOTIFY
Live from the #SelfCareIRL retreat in Mexico, I’m chatting with my first ever guest, Tracie Mae. She is a writer in Chicago and is known by many for the time she spent sharing videos on YouTube. She is a creative with a web series called Uneverything, about a Black woman who is husbandless, childless, and parentless. “It’s a comedy!” We chat all about losing our mothers, plus what we would have done differently, and how to cope if you're in the storm now.
Experiencing Grief
Tracie shares the moment she learned her mother had a stroke. She hopped on the next flight from New York to Mississippi.
She remembers getting to the hospital and realizing how much she would miss her mother’s hair, her hands, her face. She took pictures to save the memories.
Tracie notes that she looks younger than she is, but her hands look older. She always thought her hands resembled her mother’s and now she fondly looks down at them.
No Goodbyes
We talk about the pain of knowing that we will never again experience the love we felt from our mothers.
“Knowing that you had someone for most of your life… everyone don’t get that love.”
I am crippled by the fact that I didn’t say goodbye, but I also know I would have been crippled if I had seen her in that state.
“I feel guilty for not holding her hand on the way out.”
Even though my mom missed a lot of the milestones like my marriage and my becoming a writer, I know she’s been there for every single one.
“In those really important times, she always manages to show up.”
“It can be comforting knowing you have an angel looking out for you.” – Tracie Mae
