Plot Twist— Death is Not Optional, However Grief Doesn’t Have to Hurt You

LISTEN TO EP 05: ITUNES | SPOTIFY

As you probably guessed from the title, this has the potential to be a pretty heavy episode. But I want us to explore the idea of accepting death as a blessing rather than a curse. I’m also going to offer you advice on how to grieve without guilt while celebrating your own life. I credit my mother as the person who encouraged me to explore my own mental wellness. She really opened my eyes to what death really means and how beautiful that time can be for the person dying, and you and your family.

2 things I need you to know about death & grief

1. Just be a good person.

  • As good as you can be. All the time. And I mean show up and out. Even when you don’t feel like it. Actually, especially when you don’t feel like it. That’s how we, the receiver and the giver, know that it counts.

2. This one came from my mother: You have to live beyond their death.

  • “Don’t you stop living once I am gone. I need you to still soar to the top of whatever mountain you’re climbing. Check off all the things on your lists. Make this thing called life count.”

  • The hardest part of my grief has been accepting the unending absence of her. Death. Is. Final. So I had to arrive at a place where I am always choosing gratitude over grief.

Choosing gratitude has saved me from breaking down at every mention of the word “mom.” You can passively assume that through the years everything will work itself out but I’m telling you that’s a lie. This grief thing is work! You have to consciously and repeatedly choose happiness. Create joys that reminds you how to love and live again.
