LIVE Podcast EP24: Behind The Music Inside Our Wellness

LISTEN TO EP 24: ITUNES | SPOTIFY | YOUTUBE

I’m very excited to be bringing the wellness content to my Twitch fam. This is the second live podcast event (the first was with Kobe Campbell about trauma healing and you should check it out here). This is the first time I am doing a live podcast event on Twitch though! When I started getting close with The Real DJ AK47, we both noticed how incredibly similar our stories are. In this conversation, we celebrate our mothers by talking about our love for them, reflecting on the loss, and unpacking our tools for healing and moving through grief.

Preparing For Loss

  • The Real DJ AK47 found out her mother had stage 4 breast cancer when she was 26. She died 6 weeks later.

  • Her mother told her she loved her and she’s sorry for anything she did wrong. “That’s it for me. That’s all I needed to hear. None of the other stuff matters.” - The Real DJ AK47

  • We get real about the fact that we’re all going to die. So we have to get okay with the idea of that. This will prepare us for the losses.

  • “My joys and my sorrows run parallel… I have to forgive myself a lot for having the time of my life without my mom.” - Ty Alexander

Lost Voices

  • The Real DJ AK47 reflects on how painful it was to have voicemails from her mother when she was sick and sounded sick. Now she is grateful for them.

  • Personally, I don’t have any recordings of my mother and it devastates me that I can never listen to her voice again.

  • The most important piece of advice I can give you: record everything now. Even if they don’t want to be recorded.

Stages of Grief

  • “Even the stages of grief cannot prepare you for all of the ups and downs.” - The Real DJ AK47

  • The truth is that the stages of grief cannot prepare us because it turns out the stages of grief are for people who are dying, not for people who are coping. (Don’t worry, I’ll be diving into this topic in my next book.)

  • “Don’t feel bad about not following any of those stages because they’re not for us.” - Ty Alexander

Being There

  • We chat about the moments we lost our mothers and where we were. Don’t beat yourself up for not being in the room.

  • “I soon realized for my poor little tender heart, I wasn’t supposed to be there when either one of them took their last breath because that would’ve been too much for the girl." - The Real DJ AK47

Self Care IRL

  • “The more work you do on yourself, the more isolated you are.” - The Real DJ AK47

  • We talk about the tools that help us get through the grief, like journaling and therapy.

  • “All of the things that move me towards my purpose bring me joy, even when it’s not going exactly how I pictured, all of it is for a reason. I’m just happy to be alive to experience it.” - The Real DJ AK47
